Element: Prepare for task
Determine task requirements from work documentation including required material, number and nature of items to be cut and equipment to be used
Identify and follow work health and safety requirements
Determine required machines, attachments, tools, materials, work method and sequence to achieve task requirements
Select and prepare suitable work area and clear it of contaminants
Check that equipment, including components, controls and any supplementary equipment, is functional and safe
Check that scissors and other cutting equipment are appropriately sharp, functional and safe
Check that materials to be cut and sewn meet requirements and report problems in accordance with workplace procedures
Element: Develop cutting plan
Identify cutting requirements from work documentation
Confirm measurements for item, noting locations of high wear, chafing, fittings, attachments and fixing devices
Develop cutting list using appropriate format, abbreviations and terminology in accordance with workplace procedures
Finalise cutting plan in accordance with workplace procedures

Select and lay out material and inspect for flaws in accordance with task requirements
Identify finished side of materials and position on cutting table for marking or pattern lay-out

Set up sewing machine, including attachments and make required adjustments in accordance with workplace procedures
Operate machine in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures to maintain required product quality and output
Attach reinforcing or protective measures, fittings or attachments and fixing devices in accordance with workplace procedures
Inspect finished items for quality, and reprocess unacceptable items in accordance with workplace procedures
